MISSION: to study and account for soil resources in order to support sustainable existence and use of ecosystems, to preserve biodiversity

The department studies the soil cover of the regions of the Russian Federation and the Earth as a whole, soils and parent materials, soil mineral composition and micromorphology, soil biota. The main research topics are focused on:

  • soil and land resources,
  • natural and man-made processes in the soils,
  • soil protection and restoration,
  • soil ecological and socio-economic functions,
  • archaeological and paleopedology,
  • food and environmental safety,
  • functioning of urban eco-systems,
  • wastewater treatment and water management.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS OF OUR GRADUATES

Graduates of the Department have knowledge about the land resources as the basis of food security; global and regional organization of a soil cover; about the ecological and economic bases of land management; the legal basis of the assessment and protection of soils and lands; about anthropogenic transformations of soils and ecosystems, the methods of their maintenance, sustainable development and reclamation; about the principles and structure basic soil classifications.

Graduates of the department possess a system of fundamental scientific concepts, methodologies and modern methods of studying the pedosphere: the basics of remote methods of environmental research and practical skills in analyzing materials of remote sensing of soil cover; methods of GIS analysis; methodology of digital soil cartography implemented in modern geoinformation systems and skills of complex analysis of spatial data in soil science, agrochemistry and ecology; methods of environmental diagnostics, zoological indication, phitoindication and biotesting; methods of morphogenetic analysis of soils.
