The department of soil geography is organized in 1939, its founder and its first chief was professor D.G.Vilensky who supervised over it up to the end of his life (1960). In 1960 professor G.V.Dobrovolsky became the chief of the department. Nowadays he is the academician of the Russian Academy of Science. Since 1992 S.A.Shoba the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Science heads the department.
